Some Of The Worst Foods For Your Carpet And Upholstery

Posted on: 30 March 2015

If you are like most homeowners, you eat in your living room. Many people bring their food out of the kitchen, that has hard flooring, and eat on the couch and carpet. Although this might be more relaxing, it is one of the worst things you can do for your upholstery and carpet.

Here are some of the worst carpet stains and what you should do if you get a stain on your upholstery or carpet.

1. Coffee Or Tea

Coffee and tea are American staples. Most people drink a cup of coffee while relaxing on the couch in the morning. Now assume that in your morning haze you knock over a cup. Unfortunately, coffee and tea are one of the hardest things to get out of carpet. They stain terribly and they can even leave a musty smell. This is why prevention is key when it comes to coffee. It is better if you can drink your coffee in your kitchen to avoid any spills.

2. Tomato Sauce

Who doesn't eat pizza on the couch while watching a sporting event or their favorite TV show? Once again, one of the worst foods for carpet and upholstery is one that many people eat frequently while in the living room or sitting on a couch. Anything that is tomato based will leave a nasty stain on your carpet. This doesn't just go for pizza; shrimp cocktails, spaghetti, salsa and anything else with tomatoes can be dangerous for your carpet.

3. Grease

Grease is especially hard if it gets on the carpet. This is because it is resistant to water and most cleaners. If you get a grease spill, you might just have to resign to the fact that you will have a stain and ruined spot for the life of the carpet or couch. This is why you really shouldn't bring grease of any kind into a room that has carpet. If you spill, you will regret it.

What To Do If You Spill

If you do spill you can try a couple things. First, club soda is one of the best household items to remove stains. Some people recommend vinegar, but beware it will leave a smell, so be sure you are ok with the smell before you try it. Any time you try to clean a stain, make sure you blot the stain and don't rub it. Rubbing it can cause the stain to sink deeper into the fibers. You can also sprinkle baking soda over the area to remove any odors.

By avoiding these foods in the living room you can keep your carpets and upholstery looking and smelling nice.
